Condoms are the most commonly used contraceptive methods - found in bedside drawers and wallets worldwide! Whether you've relied on them for years or are just starting your sexual journey, there's always more to learn about contraception.

With the importance of sexual health on the rise, let’s dive deep and learn more about condoms and their use.

What are Condoms?

So, what are condoms? At their core, condoms are like the bouncers of the reproductive world. They are short-acting, temporary contraceptive methods, which focus on protection. Made primarily of latex, they come in vibrant shapes, sizes, colours, and even flavours. They're essentially barrier methods, ensuring the sperm don't meet with the egg. They are cost-effective and can be readily used before sexual intercourse.

Condoms are available for males (external condoms that are worn on the penis) and females (internal condoms that are worn on the vagina). But how effective are condoms? When worn correctly, condoms are 98% effective in preventing pregnancy.

What are Condoms Used For?

Condoms are very commonly used contraceptive methods that prevent the sperm from meeting the egg, thereby preventing pregnancy. Some condoms contain a chemical called spermicide that kills sperms present in the ejaculate. Besides preventing pregnancy, condoms are the only contraceptive that protects against sexually transmitted infections.

How to Use Condoms to Avoid Pregnancy?

If you are wondering how to use condoms for women or men or what is the use of condoms, you are not alone! The primary goal of condoms is to prevent pregnancy and protect against STIs.

Here's how to wear a male condom:

  1. Always check the package of the condom to confirm it is not torn or expired.
  2. Carefully tear open the wrapper and take the condom out.
  3. Place the condom on the tip of the erect penis and unroll it till the bottom. If uncircumcised, pull the foreskin down before wearing a condom.
  4. If there is less lubrication, use a lubricant or choose a lubricated condom to avoid condom tearing or breakage.
  5. After the sexual act, you must remove the condom carefully. While removing the condom, hold the rim and gently slide it off the penis without spilling any semen.
  6. Wrap the condom in a tissue or wrapper and dispose of it in a bin. Do not flush down the condom in the toilet.

Here's how to wear a female condom:

  1. Remove the condom package carefully without tearing it.
  2. Find a comfortable position. While holding the outside of the condom at the closed end, squeeze the sides of the inner ring with your thumb and forefinger and insert it into the vagina. It is like inserting a tampon.
  3. Using your finger, push the thick inner ring as far up as it will go until it rests against the cervix. The condom will expand naturally, and you may not feel it.
  4. Ensure the condom is not twisted. The thin outer ring should remain outside the vagina.
  5. Guide your partner's penis into the opening of the condom.
  6. To remove, gently twist the outer ring and pull the condom out of the vagina.
  7. Throw away the condom in the trash after using it one time.
